GALA 1990
"An evening with Anita and Lee"
After five pioneering years, Lee Towers felt the time was ripe for a break and it was not until December 1990 that he returned to the Rotterdam temple of pop.
In the context of Rotterdam's 650th anniversary, Lee Towers presented for once only a special edition of his Gala of the Year. Together with singer Anita Meijer he put together a varied programme. For the first time in the Ahoy' hall, the stage was placed on the long side of the arena, thus creating a Dutch version of the world-famous Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. The stage provided room for a special occasional orchestra including the Freddy Golden Gala Orchestra and members of the Jan Rietman Band.
For six evenings Lee & Anita welcomed the singer Gerard Joling as special guest. Lee and Anita alternated with each other in turn. Lee Towers' repertoire included sensitive renditions of "The Music Played" and "Mr Bojangles". In a sparkling medley Lee performed his hits such as "Franky", "Love Potion number nine" and "New York".
In collaboration with Vereniging Centrale Baggerbedrijven (an association of dredging companies), Veronica TV broadcast a compilation and Lee Towers was presented with the Erasmus pin by the then mayor of Rotterdam, Mr A. Peper.
